In the modern myth of motherhood, the nurturing, self-sacrificing “light mother” is idealized, concealing the darker, instinctual dimensions of the Great Mother archetype. Depth psychologists such as C.G. Jung and Erich Neumann emphasize that wholeness depends on integrating these opposites, yet maternal experience is rarely understood in this way.

What is Depth Psychology? If we look at the etymology of the word, depth psychology is the practice of listening to the soul’s (psyche) speech (logos) from beneath the waters of ordinary awareness (depth). It is an attempt to hear the deeper meanings hidden within dreams, symbols, myths, and longings, the quiet language through which the psyche reveals itself.

Archetypes are not consciously invented, they are inherited organizing principles, psychological expressions of the same deep patterns that shape life itself, and because of this autonomous quality they arrive carrying a compelling, often intensely emotional force capable of guiding, challenging, and transforming the person through whom they emerge.
